Short Post, Busy Day

One of the fun things about owning a website is the ability to peer behind the scenes and see what people are typing into Google before they find you. Most of the time it’s utterly expected – various combinations of “Peter” and “Ball” and occasionally “Horn” feature prominently – and sometimes it’s stuff that makes slightly less sense, and sometimes it’s phrases that make you wonder exactly what there is on your blog that’s connected to it. I’m not sure, for example, why Google has suddenly taken to linking my blog to searches on Grey’s Anatomy, and I can’t imagine the people who follow the links are going to be anything other than disappointed. # Off to take my first tutorial at UQ this afternoon, which is a little nerve-wracking in the way that going to do something you haven’t done in a very long time can be when someone is paying you good money to do it well. Unlikely Musical Obsessions

There is a rumour that Ratt is going to release a new album through Roadrunner Records later this year. Against all odds, this brings me joy.  And it will continue to do so until I realise it has the potential to be an ever bigger debacle than Chinese Democracy. Oh hair metal, I miss you so. Just, you know, don’t bring back the hair and tight pants when you slink in through the back door of teenage nostalgia.

Smart Advice from Smart People

Cyborg

Scientists in Korea transmit data along a human arm at broadband speeds. Electrodes were placed on the arm about ten inches apart and they transmitted data at ten magabits per second. As a child of the eighties this kind of thing blows my mind, especially given the large majority of the formative movies from my childhood dealt with the relationship between man and technology, and I kind of miss it. Especially cyborgs. SF seems to have moved away from the cyborg towards post-humanism as a means of exploring this issue, which makes a kind of sense, but the whole man/meat merging will always be my first love.

Red Planet Squee

Given my weebling joy of the Flash Gordon marathon I posted about a week or two ago, you may be inclined to speculate that I’m something of a fan of these planetary romance/sword-and-ray-gun genres wherein heroes from earth are plucked up and cast across the universe by various means. You would, of course, be correct – and thus be able to predict the gibbering joy that filled my office this morning when I discovered that there is a John Carter of Mars film in the works, with Michael Chabon working on the script. It’s still a long way off, to be sure, but I shall remain quietly excited about the possibility that it may manifest and be good viewing. I’m now going to head off to the computer without the internet to get some work done, in the hopes that yesterday’s burst of productivity can be maintained.
